Our Pet Project
It was a big adjustment when my husband and I became parents. Suddenly, we weren't free to leave the house without making plans, and late nights were out of the question. Our sleep was often disturbed. Then there were the feedings, doctor visits, and vaccinations. There was constant disciplining and later trips to and from school. Our lives were never the same. And it got even harder when we had children.
Our first real "child" was a dog named Pixel and although she had unusually large ears and a very prominent nose for a child, to us she was beautiful. Pets affect our lives in profound ways and Pixel was no exception. Her impact on our day to day activities was profound. And her joy, energy, and loyalty sustained us from moment to moment, from year to year.
In many ways, Pixel prepared us for parenthood. All the care and time we gave her and all the love she returned was practice for our first baby 2 years later.
Even after we had babies, Pixel continued to be our "first child." In fact, as time went by my appreciation of her only deepened. She hadn't left me with stretch marks. It took just one month to potty train her. She took naps willingly and always cleaned her plate. And never once did she say "all the other dogs have one."
For all that…and because I never had to start a college fund for her…my pet products are dedicated to Pixel.
