Mitzi

Mitzi: A Dog with Taste

Mitzi, a Terrier/Poodle mix, was a pound dog with a refined sense of fashion and décor. She took particular exception to our preference in bed spreads. So she ate three of them. Our slippers and shoes seemed to equally displease her. She devoured several pairs. When she turned her disdain towards our lamp cords, my parents finally decided it was time for obedience school. Mitzi was my parent's first "child". They adopted her on a wedding anniversary and they shared a joint birthday/anniversary celebration for the next 16 years. After her training, she evolved into the best behaved dog I've had, earning the nickname Saint Mitzi forever after. Mitzi loved children, and when my sister and I came along she took on the role of "Nana," sleeping under our cribs and then in our beds. She even ate the broccoli we secretly slipped her under the table. Luckily for us, her discriminating tastes did not extend to the food realm.

Muffin

Muffin: A Doll and a Dog All in One

Muffin was a Pekepoo, cute and curly and custom-made for two little girls. Our friends had Nancy dolls and Barbies. My sister and I had Muffin. We took her on walks in our doll stroller and dressed her up in all kinds of feminine finery. She loved it. She also loved to hang on my nightgown as I ran down the hall. I told her it was too big for her but she never gave up.

Ashley

Ashley: The Dumb Blond

Lady Ashley, a cocker with an impressive family tree and less than impressive intelligence. In spite of her lady-like bearing, one of her passions was playing ball. Not with us, mind you. Although she sometimes loved to play fetch, she was just as happy tossing and retrieving balls by herself. We had an apple tree in our backyard and if there wasn't a ball around an apple worked just as well. If Ashley couldn't find any apples, she'd sit under the tree and bark for one. Fortunately, although we had a rather dim dog, our tree was gifted/talented. It rewarded her with an apple every time.

River

River: The Dog that Should have been a Sandwich

While vacationing at the Russian River my daughter went to the local Safeway to purchase lunch meat and returned instead with a puppy. River turned out to be a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix and is the only large dog we've owned. We thought our garage was puppy proof, until the day I came home and discovered she had eaten a dozen large green and red Christmas lights, left on the workbench. Amazingly it caused her no harm, although the same can not be said for our Christmas tree that year. After River also ate our super glue, I learned to store things really high. And to park the car on the street.

Sadie

Sadie: the Talker

Sadie is a Jack Rat Terrier (Jack Russell and Rat terrier mix) and she is the definition of "cute", not smart. She's my empty nest dog and boy does she fill that nest - with noise. Sadie has a barking problem and often has to be "shelved." That means we place her high on a piece of furniture till she stops barking, which works every time. We're thinking of selling our idea to kindergarten teachers.

Pixel: the Sassy Pup

PixelPixel is my first child, my baby. She's a 7 year old beagle/cocker mix, very outspoken, with a distinctive howl. Once as a puppy, Pixel had climbed onto the forbidden couch. When her dad told her to get down, she turned, looked at him, and defiantly said, "AROOOOOOOO!" When she's a teenager, I'm going to have my hands full.

Mutsi

Mutsi: the pint-sized protector

A beagle mix who was the runt of the litter and stayed a runt. Two years after we adopted her our first son Chris was born and the lines between species were suddenly blurred. Mutsi took him her dog toys. Chris gave her his food. Mutsi slept under the bassinet. Chris slept with her puppies when she had a litter. We weren't sure if we should buy two licenses or start two college funds. One day Chris piled up some boxes, opened our gate, and escaped from our yard. We found him three blocks away, toddling along the road. Toddling next to him was Mutsi, who followed and nudged him away from the street. Mutsi died at 19. Chris is 38 now and to this day he knows to stay on the sidewalk.

Scamp

Scamp: the ready-to-wear cat

Chris went off alone to play with a friend across the street and returned not-alone, but carrying six week old Scamp. He was Chris' constant companion, even sleeping with him, until our second son, Mike, came along. Then the fair-minded Scamp divided his time equally between both boys. Chris and Mike liked to dress Scamp in costumes. In fact, Scamp was a costume. They used to wrap him around their neck like a furry boa. Scamp was as tolerant as he was versatile. He lived to be 19 and spent much of that time hiding in paper bags. Who can blame him?

Sabrina

Sabrina: the Stunt Dog

Brina was a well-bred sheltie who was unfortunately all beauty and no brains. She loved to take a running start and leap out of the house into the front yard. Alas, she never noticed the picture window in between. Twice she had to be stitched up by the vet. Once I patched her up myself. What Brina lacked in smarts she made up for in heart. Each time she dove through the window, it was because Scamp was outside and she thought the newsboy was throwing his paper at him. Brina lived to be 17 -- proof that miracles do happen.

Tyrone

Tyrone: think Antonio Banderas with a tail

I chose him because he looked like Scamp but there all similarities ended. Tyrone was an independent rogue who liked to play tricks on his best friend, Mike. He would wait outside his door in the morning and when Mike sleepily emerged he'd jump on his foot and hang on with his claws until Mike was ready for school. He also loved to surprise Mike with gifts when he returned from school - mice, birds and frogs to be exact. I guess he didn't think much of my bag lunches.

Shasta: The Goodwill Ambassador

A few years ago there was a birthday party in our park and all the neighborhood kids were there. The hostess greeted each one warmly, and offered them paper hats and party favors. Then she lay down to chew on a bone. That's my Shasta - a dog so friendly she was dubbed "professional greeter" by the regulars in our local park. It's been Shasta's habit for the last 13 years to trot over and personally welcome every visitor to the park, human or animal. Shasta is a loving, obedient dog who has never given us any trouble…except when it comes to water. She'll go in all right. She just won't come out. She'll stay in the river indefinitely, swimming beside any canoe that comes along, and ignoring our calls to return to shore. If you ever see a Golden Retriever happily paddling her way out to the Pacific, please give us a call.
